Starbucks launches compostable coffee cups. Are they in Ohio right now?

Coffee giant Starbucks has launched compostable cups at select locations nationwide, drawing fire from customers on social media.

Nation's Restaurant News reports that the Seattle-based coffee chain is using the compostable cups in 14 states "to comply with local mandates that ban or limit single-use plastics." They are not being rolled out nationwide, Starbucks confirmed to the publication.

The compostable cups are made from fiber-based paperboard with a bioplastic liner, making the cold beverage cups opaque, according to Starbucks.

"We’ve set an ambitious goal for our cups to be 100% compostable, recyclable, or reusable; sourced from 50% recycled materials; and made using 50% less virgin fossil fuel-derived sources by 2030," the company states on its website.

The new cups are not in Ohio, per NRN, but are in the following states:

Starbucks has hundreds of stores across the Buckeye State. One data-scraping site put the total at 480. Another says there are 517.

Starbucks customers have taken to social media to complain that the compostable cups are changing the favor of drinks, getting soggy as well as leaking and making a mess. Also, for those who like to share their drink on social media, the cups make it hard to see what cold beverages look like.

Starbucks acknowledged to NRN that its first compostable cup design might fall short, telling the publication: “Our newest cups and lids are our initial response, and we are committed to improving them. As an alternative, customers are welcome to bring in their clean, personal reusable cup or order their beverage ‘for here’ to have their beverage served in a ceramic mug or glass.”
